A section of an empty oceanfront lot caught on fire Tuesday afternoon, but was quickly contained by Kill Devil Hills firefighters before it could spread through the dunes to nearby homes.

The fire was spotted around 1 p.m. in the 3100 block of North Virginia Dare Trail near milepost 5.5.

Several people tried to slow the fire from spreading with buckets of water until firefighters arrived and extinguished the blaze.

The cause of the fire is not yet known, but Dominion Power crews were on the scene afterwards and an eyewitness said a spark from the nearby power lines may have been to blame.
