Crews continue searching for a 26-year-old kayaker reported missing over the weekend in the Croatan Sound between the Dare County mainland and Roanoke Island.

N.C. Wildlife Law Enforcement Sgt. Johnathan Beardsley said the man went fishing in a kayak Saturday around 7 p.m. near the William B. Umstead Bridge, also known as the Old Manns Harbor Bridge.

The man’s wife contacted Dare County 911 on Sunday after he had failed to return home and his vehicle was found at the N.C. Wildlife access next to the bridge.

Beardsley said Monday afternoon the kayak was found overturned approximately nine miles southeast of the bridge by a commercial fisherman.

The missing man is described as being 5 feet, 11 inches tall, weighing 220 pounds, and was wearing gray waders and a burgandy sweatshirt.

Beardelsy said it was not known if the missing kayaker had a life jacket on board or was wearing one at any point.

N.C. Wildlife officers, the Dare County Sheriff’s Office and U.S. Coast Guard initiated a search Sunday night, which resumed Monday morning with additional assistance from the N.C. Marine Patrol.

Anyone with information is asked to call Dare Central Communications at 252-473-3444 or N.C. Wildlife Communications at 800-662-7137.
