An Elizabeth City man being served a search warrant was shot to death Wednesday by a Pasquotank County Sheriff’s Office deputy, and at least one member of a Dare County law enforcement agency was at the scene at the time of the incident.
Andrew Brown, Jr. died around 8:30 a.m. outside a home on Perry Street off Roanoke Avenue.
A large crowd gathered near the scene throughout the day, some shouting at officers and the media about the latest police-related shooting in the United States, coming one day after a Minneapolis jury convicted former city police Officer Derek Chauvin of murder and other charges in the May 2020 death of George Floyd.
During a news conference where only limited information about the incident was shared, Pasquotank County Sheriff Tommy Wooten confirmed deputies were wearing body cameras and that footage will eventually be released.
Wooten said the deputy had been placed on administrative leave.
The Elizabeth City Council plans to hold an emergency meeting tonight at 6 p.m. in Council Chambers to discuss the shooting.
Members of the police departments in Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head, Manteo and the Dare County Sheriff’s Office, comprise the Dare County Drug Task Force, which assists with investigations in other jurisdictions in the area.
The N.C. State Bureau of Investigation is now in charge of the probe, as is standard with any type of shooting involving a member of law enforcement in North Carolina.
Special Agent-In-Charge for the Northeastern District Masha Rogers said following their investigation they will present their findings to the District Attorney’s Office.
“What we are looking for at this time will be accurate answers, and not fast answers,” said District Attorney Andrew Womble.
“We are going to wait for the full and complete investigation by the State Bureau of Investigation,” Womble said.” Then we will review that and make any determinations that we deem appropriate at that time.”
