Four Southern Shores police officers, Sgt. Eric Brinkley, Corporal Darrell Brickhouse, SRO Tracy Mann and Officer Jamie Hines responded to a serious injury motor vehicle accident on July 14, 2020 on U.S. 158 near Duck Woods Drive.

The accident involved a large box truck and a small passenger vehicle. When officers arrived the male driver of the small passenger car sustained serious injuries, the most severe was to his arm, that required quick action to keep him from losing more blood.

Officers successfully used a field tourniquet to stop the bleeding and keep the male alive and responsive. Officers then helped Dare County EMS and the Southern Shores Volunteer Fire Department get the man out of the car and into an ambulance.

Due to the officers training and quick actions, he was transported by Dare Medflight to Norfolk and survived. They were honored recently with the department’s Lifesaving Award.
