Opening weekend of The Lost Colony is always an exciting, and stressful, event for the cast and crew of the nation’s longest running outdoor drama.
But this year’s first performances had even more significance. First it was the return to Waterside Theater on Roanoke Island following the COVID-19 pandemic cancellation last summer, the first season that had to be called off since World War II.
And for the first time, native people are playing the roles of their ancestors in the performance, eleven in all. That includes seven members of the Lumbee Tribe from southeastern North Carolina.
