Low pressure system off Cape Hatteras may briefly become tropical storm

A well-defined low pressure system located about 90 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras is acquiring more tropical characteristics this morning, but forecasters say it won’t pose a threat to land.

The system is moving away from the coast and may become a tropical depression or even a named storm later today or tonight. As it moves northeastward, it will hit colder waters south of Nova Scotia, ending any further development, the weather service said.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November, with the National Hurricane Center predicting another busy year of named storms.
