Police have filed charges against the driver of a tanker truck that caused a multi-vehicle crash last week on U.S. 158 at Kitty Hawk Road that led to the death of a Virginia woman and injured four other people.

Billy Ray Turner, 30, of Jarvisburg, was driving northbound on North Croatan Highway on July 1, when his truck drove around multiple vehicles and ran the red light at the intersection, the Kitty Hawk Police Department announced in a news release Saturday.

According to eyewitnesses and videos obtained by investigators, the tanker truck then hit a vehicle turning onto U.S. 158 from the oceanside of Kitty Hawk Road. The truck fell onto its left side and hit six stopped vehicles in the southbound lanes of Croatan Highway.

Four people were transported to the Outer Banks Hospital for non-life threatening injuries, while a fifth was flown Dare MedFlight to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Judith Marks, 78, of Hopewell, Va., later died from her injuries.

Turner was arrested on July 10 and charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, careless and reckless driving, and running a red light. He was released from the Dare County Detention Center after posting a $5,000 unsecured bond.
