Should have aired down!
On Friday morning, National Park Service rangers and the Avon Volunteer Fire Department responded to a significant off-road vehicle fire near the exit to Ramp 38, located just south of Avon. No injuries were reported.
The fire destroyed a 1997 Ford Explorer near the exit ramp, and prompted a reminder from the National Park Service.
“The Seashore strongly recommends that tire pressure be lowered to at least 20 psi before driving on designated ORV routes in order to decrease stress on vehicles and help maintain travel conditions for other drivers,” said David Hallac, superintendent, National Parks of Eastern North Carolina. “Fortunately, passengers in this destroyed vehicle smelled smoke and quickly got out before sustaining serious injuries.”
