The FBI has confirmed that a hitchhiker who caught a ride Wednesday morning from Camden to Dare County was not the Florida man wanted in connection with the death of Gabby Petito.

The Daily Advance reported the Camden County Sherriff’s Office was notified Wednesday morning about a man walking along the U.S. 158 causeway between Elizabeth City and Camden a caller to 911 said resembled Brian Laundrie.

He is wanted by federal authorities after Petito, 22, was found dead in Wyoming last month in a case that has attracted worldwide attention.

Camden Sheriff Kevin Jones told The Daily Advance his office contacted the Currituck County Sherriff’s Office, who in turn reached out to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The FBI tracked down the person who picked up the hitchhiker, and along with a review of traffic cameras, was able to determine the man was not Laundrie.

While the search for Laundrie has been concentrated around southwest Florida, sightings have been reported from all around the country including several in the past week in North Carolina.
