Man lying on the Beach Road in Kill Devil Hills dies after being struck by vehicle

Kill Devil Hills police said a 36-year-old man lying down on the Beach Road died after he was struck by a vehicle Sunday night.

The collision happened at approximately 8:32 p.m. at the intersection of North Virginia Dare Trail and First Street, according to a news release.

Investigators found that one car traveling northbound on N.C. 12 swerved after the driver spotted something in the road north of a crosswalk, but a second vehicle following behind could not avoid striking the man.

Police said there is overhead street lighting in the area of the intersection, and both vehicles were traveling the posted speed of 35 mph.

The man suffered head and leg injuries, was transported to The Outer Banks Hospital, where he passed away.

Alcohol was not a factor for either driver. The investigation is continuing. The victim has been identified, however notification of next of kin is incomplete and his information is being withheld for the time being.
