The Currituck County Board of Education voted during a special meeting Thursday to delay changing its indoor mask policy due to the recent spike in COVID-19 cases.
During last month’s meeting, the school board had voted unanimously to allow masks to be optional inside all buildings beginning on Tuesday, January 18.
The case count for the last five days in the Currituck County Schools was at 71, the highest number of coronavirus cases reported during this school year, according to a news release.
“In an effort to keep students and staff in school, and limit the number of required quarantines during this spike in COVID-19 cases, the Board of Education unanimously voted to delay (making) masks optional,” according to the statement.
The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Currituck school board is on January 20. At that time, the board is scheduled to review again the COVID-19 case counts and hold further discussion regarding mask use and requirements will take place.
