Monday, January 17 is the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday, which is a federal and state holiday. That means there will be schedule changes for government operations, and banks and post offices will be closed.
Dare County
In observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, all Dare County offices will be closed on Monday, January 17, 2022.
In addition, the Dare County Public Works Department, which provides trash collection for the unincorporated areas of Dare County as well as the Town of Kitty Hawk*, has announced a revised trash collection schedule for next week in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Residential trash collection for the week of Monday, January 17, 2022, through Friday, January 21, 2022, will take place as follows.
Monday, January 17, 2022 – CLOSED for Martin Luther King Jr. Day (no trash collection)
Tuesday, January 18, 2022 – Kitty Hawk, Colington, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras
Wednesday, January 19, 2022 – Manteo, Wanchese, East Lake, Stumpy Point, Manns Harbor, Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo and Avon
Thursday, January 20, 2022 – Kitty Hawk, Colington, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras
Friday, January 21, 2022 – Manteo, Wanchese, East Lake, Stumpy Point, Manns Harbor, Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo and Avon
Commercial dumpsters will be picked up on Tuesday, January 18, 2022, and on Friday, January 21, 2022.
The Dare County C&D Landfill, Buxton Transfer Station and Manteo Recycle Yard will be closed on Monday, January 17, 2022, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Town of Manteo
The Town of Manteo Administrative Offices will be closed on Monday, January 17, 2022 in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. There will be no commercial or residential solid waste collection on that day. Solid waste collection will be done on Tuesday, January 18, 2022 and Thursday, January 20, 2022.
Town of Nags Head
The Town’s administrative offices will be closed in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on January 17, 2022. In addition, as a result of the holiday, there are changes to the residential (blue route only) and commercial dumpster collection schedules.
Trash on the blue sanitation route will be collected on Tuesday, January 18, 2022, instead of on Monday, January 17, 2022.
Dumpsters on the commercial route will be collected on Tuesday, January 18, 2022, instead of on Monday, January 17, 2022.
Town of Kitty Hawk
On Monday, January 17th, town offices will be closed in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. There will be NO trash collection on Monday. Collection will take place on Tuesday and Thursday.
Town of Duck
The Town Administrative offices will be closed Monday, January 17, in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
