Animal cruelty and other charges are pending against the owners of an apparent dog breeding operation in northern Currituck County, after authorities seized 61 dogs and found one dead.
The seizure took place Friday from Bentwood Labradors in the Wedgewood Lakes neighborhood in Moyock, according to a post on the Currituck County Government Facebook page.
47 adults and 14 puppies were reportedly found in “unsanitary and inhumane living conditions”. Another dog was found dead when Currituck Animal Control arrived at the scene.
Several of the dogs have been taken for emergency medical treatment, while the rest of the dogs are being assessed and cared for at the Currituck Animal Shelter in Maple.
Other details about the case were not immediately available.
