After a two year hiatus, the 5th Annual Dare2Care OBX Shred Fest will return to the Soundside Event Site in Nags Head on Sat., May 21, 2022, with tons of live music, skateboarders, BMX riders, roller derby women, local artisans and community civic organizations.
Gates will open at 1:30pm and the event will start at 2pm with a special Veteran Honoring Ceremony, including a presentation of the five military branch flags by local Veterans and our National Anthem being sung by The OBX Shredders lead singer, Joshua Holland.
Following the opening ceremony, check out a performance by The OBX Shredders, the Outer Banks’ first and only inclusive rock band. Then Sebi Music’s reggaeton artists Holden McOwen and Jahzel will lead a moving tribute performance to Ravann Rachelle and Sebastian Lopez. There will also be acoustic indie rock by Duf Franco, progressive pop punk by Revival Recordings’ featured band Frontside and alternative rock by Stereo In Words at Shred Fest.
Big Al Staggs and the JA JA’s will headline Shred Fest. Staggs is the original frontman for Left Wing Fascists (LWF), from Norfolk, VA who played many shows at historic Outer Banks venues like Mexicono’s, Atlantis and Port O’ Call. The band spent a few tours opening for the Ramones and played Lollapalooza on the second stage in 1992. Staggs and longtime producer Stacy Heydon, who produced all of the LWF releases and who was also the guitarist for David Bowie and Iggy Pop, have collaborated on Big Al Staggs and the JA JA’s latest record.
“I am looking forward to playing all of the Left Wing Fascists favorites along with new singles off of the upcoming So No record,” said musician Big Al Staggs. “Our band has taken Stacy’s bass drums and guitar parts and formulated them into a high energy show not to be missed. One of our newest singles Welcome to Island Time is about Hatteras Island. We will be playing this new single about the OBX to our OBX friends and family along with all the songs from the solo work and the LWF catalog.”
New to Shred Fest this year is an aerial BMX show with Chain Reaction Action Sports from Eastern North Carolina.
Back by popular demand are the Chicks in Bowls, a traveling professional group of Roller Derby women that will be sessioning the ramp along with male and female skateboarders.
OBX Shred Fest tickets will be available to purchase at the gate the day of the event. General admission for adults is $25, admission for Veterans and Active Military is $15, admission for kids ages 6-17 is $10, and kids five and under are free. There is also a Family Fun ticket for $60, which includes general admission for families of four. Free on-site parking is available and offered on a first come first served basis.
This family-friendly event will also include a Family Fun Zone run by the Outer Banks Montessori Collective, Dare County Parks and Recreation and the Dare County Special Olympics athletes. There will be arts and crafts including face painting as well as games including hula hooping, corn hole, Jenga, horseshoes, and bocce ball. For a small donation, guests can also enjoy hot dogs along with lemonade from the Lopez Lemonade Stand to honor Sebastian Lopez.
There will be alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages for sale as well as delicious food from the Sooey’s BBQ/Shipwrecks food truck, so come hungry.
College of The Albemarle will be running Renate’s Raffle Hut at OBX Shred Fest. Raffle items include a Kitty Hawk Kites Adventure Hang Gliding Package, a tattoo package from Vertigo Tattoo & Body Piercing, a complete skateboard deck set up and a pair of Impala Roller Skates from Wave Riding Vehicles, a beach cruiser, a jewelry package, as well as gift certificates to Outer Banks restaurants. Each of the raffle items are valued between $250-$500 and all proceeds from Renate’s Raffle Hut go directly to help expand music programs for our IDD Community members.
OBX Shred Fest will also include a Vendor Market along with the Dare2Care OBX Community Corner featuring several nonprofits and organizations including Dare County Special Olympics, OBX Pride, Room in the Inn, Mane and Taill, Talk It Out NC who work to help reduce underage drinking, Operation Comfort Warrior, the Hail Marys Ride who are an all female motorcycle club, Vidant Community Health Worker Program, Carolyn Hall honoring her late son Ryker with life saving info on narcan and fentanyl test strips, GEM (Gentle Expert Memorycare), and several more.
Presented by the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau, Shred Fest is an annual fundraiser that encourages inclusion for individuals with special needs and supports programs for these individuals, including free music lessons. The event also supports programs for local Veterans.
