The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has announced that the Rodanthe Bridge on Hatteras Island, also known as the “Jug Handle Bridge,” is now open to vehicular traffic.
The 2.4-mile bridge—which extends over the Pamlico Sound from the southern end of the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge to the northern end of Rodanthe—allows motorists to bypass the S-Curves, an area of N.C. Highway 12 in northern Rodanthe that is prone to significant ocean overwash and flooding.
On Saturday, April 9, 2022, NCDOT held a ribbon-cutting ceremony and community day to celebrate the completion of the Rodanthe Bridge, which had been under construction since early 2018.
