During the November 2026 General Election, Currituck County voters will decide whether to retain or alter the county’s current electoral structure for the Board of Commissioners.
The Board of Commissioners proposes altering the structure to a combination of six electoral districts and one at-large seat. Commissioners identified the Six-District Plan during its meeting on January 5, 2026, following a public hearing.
Under the Six District Plan’s electoral structure, a district candidate must reside within the electoral district and is elected by the district. Only the single at-large seat would be elected countywide.
The board’s current electoral structure is comprised of seven members: five from residency districts and two elected at-large. Residency district candidates must reside in their district but are elected countywide, as are the two at-large commissioners.
Next, the Board of Commissioners must adopt a resolution that describes the changes in the electoral structure and calls for a special election. This resolution is expected to be on the agenda for the Board’s January 20, 2026, meeting.
The resolution will allow the Board of Elections to place the referendum on the November General Election ballot, at which time citizens will vote to either keep the current electoral district format or adopt the new Six-District Plan.
