The 2026 Outer Banks Polar Plunge is shaping up to be one of the largest yet, with more than 240 participants already registered and expectations of surpassing 300 plungers by event day. The annual fundraiser will take place Saturday, February 28, 2026, at Jennette’s Pier, benefiting Dare County Special Olympics.
Janet Arnold, Contributor with The Outer Banks Life, recently interviewed event organizer Sandy Pace in regards to the upcoming event. Enthusiasm continues to build as the plunge approaches. “We’re currently over halfway to our $60,000 fundraising goal,” Pace said. “Reaching that goal ensures we can meet our budget needs for the year and continue providing opportunities for our athletes at no cost to them.”
Funds raised support 142 registered Dare County Special Olympics athletes, covering expenses such as uniforms, medals, sports equipment, facility rentals, and travel and meals for state and regional competitions, as well as local tournaments and special events.
Pace offered simple advice for first-time plungers: listen carefully to the safety briefing and only go as far into the water as feels comfortable. “You don’t have to go all the way in or under,” she said. “Just have fun.”
The event will be held rain or shine, with no backup date planned. Community members interested in volunteering are encouraged to contact Pace directly at dare@sonc.net or 252-489-5720.
With strong participation, community support, and a meaningful cause, the 2026 Outer Banks Polar Plunge promises another memorable day of chilly fun for a warm-hearted mission.

- Registrations will be taken up to 10:45 a.m.
- 11:00AM – Opening Awards Ceremony
- 11:30 a.m. – Safety Brief
- 11:40 a.m. – PL!
Each participant will receive a raffle ticket and be eligible for prizes. All registered individuals will receive a local “I PLUNGED AT JENNETTE’S PIER” shirt when they check in!
