February is recognized across the country as American Heart Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about cardiovascular health and heart disease prevention. In that spirit, Currituck County residents are encouraged to take part in a statewide effort that could help save lives.
On Wednesday, February 25, 2026, the RACE-CARS Trial out of Duke University is attempting to set a world record by training 30,000 people across North Carolina in Hands-Only CPR in a single day. According to event organizers, Currituck County is among the participating counties in the initiative.
The CPR World Record Training Event is designed to improve bystander response to cardiac arrest, one of the leading causes of death in the United States. Cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, anywhere, at any age, and currently only 1 in 10 victims survive. Hands-Only CPR takes just minutes to learn, requires no certification, and can double or even triple a person’s chance of survival.
Organizers say the goal goes beyond setting a record: it’s about equipping communities with the knowledge and confidence to act when seconds matter most.
Currituck County residents who would like to help break the record are encouraged to visit the official RACE-CARS Trial website to find their nearest participating location and training time. Events will be held across participating North Carolina counties throughout the day on February 25.
The training is quick, free, and open to the public.
