For U.S. travellers dreaming of the Algarve’s golden cliffs and sun-soaked Atlantic coastline, the answer may already be in their backyard.

The Algarve is Portugal’s southernmost region and one of Europe’s most in-demand summer destinations. It draws visitors for the same reasons people spend a summer on the OBX: dramatic barrier island geography, expansive Atlantic beaches, and a laid-back coastal culture built around outdoor living. In 2023, the Algarve broke its own tourism record, welcoming over 5.1 million visitors – a number the Outer Banks matches stride for stride. Tourism is the number one industry on the Outer Banks, with more than 5 million visitors arriving each year**.

The geographic similarities are also striking. The Algarve’s south-facing coastline runs roughly 155 km, stretching a further 50 km north beyond Cape St. Vincent, encompassing sheltered coves framed by golden cliffs, barrier islands accessible only by boat, and Atlantic shores for surfers, a coastal profile the Outer Banks knows well. The OBX stretches 200 miles along the North Carolina coast, with stretches that remain accessible only by ferry or four-wheel drive, which mirrors the Algarve’s more remote eastern reaches.

Climatically, the comparison holds up too. The Algarve logs around 3,000 sunshine hours per year (one of the highest totals in Europe) with peak summer temperatures averaging 82–84°F. The Outer Banks runs a little cooler but no less inviting: summers average around 79°F, with ocean water temperatures holding between 70–80°F throughout the season.

With transatlantic flights to Portugal averaging upwards of $800 return, the case for the Outer Banks as a high-value European dupe has never been stronger. It’s the same Atlantic, same experience, but no passport required!
