With the largest event scheduled to date, the fourth annual Outer Banks National Soft-Shell Week officially takes hold May 11-16. Featuring over 38 participating restaurants from Duck to Hatteras Island, the 2026 celebration of all things crab will introduce new ways for seafood enthusiasts to experience the “water-to-table” tradition.
Soft-shell crabs are blue crabs that have recently molted their hard outer shells, making them entirely edible and prized for their delicate, sweet flavor. Because the molting window is extremely short, the week serves as a high-stakes showcase of the craftsmanship of local watermen and chefs.
This year, the celebration expands beyond the plate with several inaugural features designed to get diners closer to the source. In a first-of-its-kind partnership with Outer Banks Adventures, the event will debut a ticketed “tapas-style” traveling tasting tour known as the Soft-Shell Express.
On May 12 and May 13, guests can board a guided shuttle to visit working crab shedding operations for a behind-the-scenes look at the harvest before stopping at local restaurants for exclusive small-plate tastings. Additionally, participating mixologists are joining the fray for the first time, crafting specialized cocktails designed to pair perfectly with the rich flavors of the crab, while the new official mascot, Sheldon, will make special appearances throughout the week.
Diners are encouraged to participate in a community-wide culinary crawl, sampling everything from classic fried soft-shell sandwiches to elevated, inventive entrees at favorites like Basnight’s Lone Cedar Cafe and Blue Water Grill & Raw Bar.
As in previous years, the event features a competitive element where diners can vote for their favorite dishes online. The “People’s Choice” winner will be crowned at the conclusion of the week, celebrating the most creative use of this local staple.
