Dare County Library’s Summer Reading Program begins June 15

Registration for the Dare County Library’s popular Summer Reading Program—which will be held from Monday, June 15, 2026 through Friday, July 31, 2026—begins this month!

The free program, whose 2026 theme is “Unearth a Story,” encourages children of all ages to read during the summer months to help maintain the reading skills they developed throughout the school year and ensure they are well prepared to enter the classroom once again in the fall.

In addition to rewarding children with prize opportunities for every day they read during the program, the Summer Reading Program also encourages children to participate in a variety of fun, engaging and educational programs and activities scheduled to take place at each of the Dare County Library’s three branches throughout the summer.

For this year’s Summer Reading Program, the Dare County Library will embrace the “Unearth a Story” theme by “exploring all things underground, underneath and hidden”—from dinosaurs, hobbit holes and fairy hollows to ancient artifacts, the depths of the ocean, treasure right under our feet and more!

Registration at all three Dare County Library locations starts Monday, June 1, 2026 and will be available both in person and online. Kick-off events will be held on Monday, June 15, 2026 at the Kill Devil Hills Library, on Tuesday, June 16, 2026 at the Manteo Library as well as on Tuesday, June 16, 2026 at the Hatteras Library featuring Pork Chop Productions Interactive Theater, who will present “Dinosaur, Dinosaur, Wolf”—a modern retelling of the classic fable, “The Boy Who Cried Wolf.” Children and their parents can stop by the front desk of their local library branch anytime during regular business hours this summer to sign up once registration begins. For those unable to get to the library during operating hours, online registration is available at DareNC.gov/SummerReading.
