Looking ahead to Labor Day weekend, runners and walkers can enjoy the holiday against a scenic Outer Banks backdrop while supporting the Hatteras Island community.
The 3rd Annual Labor Day Lighthouse 5K will take place Monday, September 7, at the Old Lighthouse Beach Access in Buxton. The course guides participants through the newly refurbished Cape Hatteras Lighthouse grounds and surrounding park, offering a memorable opportunity to run or walk in the shadow of one of the Outer Banks’ most iconic landmarks. Because the lighthouse is currently undergoing repairs and temporary removal of its balcony and lantern room, this year’s event carries a tongue-in-cheek “Topless Lighthouse” theme.
Beyond the finish line, proceeds from the race benefit key local organizations and community initiatives, including the Buxton Civic Association, the Buxton food pantry, and Buxton-Frisco Pathway project groups. Organizers are also continuing their support for Mighty Milly, a young Buxton resident undergoing treatment for B-cell leukemia.
The race takes place Monday, September 7, 2026, on Labor Day, from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. EDT at the Old Lighthouse Beach Access in Buxton, N.C. The race fee is $45 plus a $4.64 sign-up fee, and registration is required by Sunday, September 6, at 11:59 p.m.
The first 200 registered participants will receive a lighthouse-themed commemorative race shirt, an eco-friendly reusable cup, a unique finisher medal, and a special finisher surprise gift.
Post-race festivities feature live music, refreshments—including fresh fruit and a favorite apple treat from a local bakery and awards. Prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female finishers, along with numerous random door prizes.
Whether you are chasing a personal best, enjoying a morning walk, or looking for a memorable way to kick off Labor Day, every step supports the community that makes Hatteras Island special. All runners and walkers are welcome.
