Dare County Deputy Sheriff Master Officer Brent Doughtie has been named Dare County Employee of the Month for September 2026. The prestigious award was presented to Master Officer Doughtie by Dare County Sheriff Doug Doughtie during the Dare County Board of Commissioners meeting that was held at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, September 1, 2026.
As he began his Employee of the Month presentation, Sheriff Doughtie noted that Master Officer Doughtie’s work has made him a familiar and respected presence to many people throughout Dare County, particularly those who regularly visit the Dare County Justice Center, where he performs the majority of his duties and responsibilities, as well as the Dare County Administration Building, where he frequently assists with security during Dare County Board of Commissioners meetings.
“Brent has been recognized by one of the individuals that he spends more time with than anybody,” said Sheriff Doughtie. “Brent works in our civil process, which anybody in here that comes to court or is around it would know that they see him either at the metal detector or in the courtroom or walking the halls in this building, because he does the security over here. So, he’s an all-around guy and everybody knows him. I don’t care where I go, somebody knows who he is or where he works.”
Despite being such a familiar presence in the community and having earned the respect of those who work alongside him, Master Officer Doughtie has never been one to seek recognition for his work. Sheriff Doughtie emphasized that his son’s commitment to public service is rooted in his genuine dedication to the people he serves rather than a desire for accolades.

“He’s never been one that wanted any accolades or tried to put himself up in front of anybody,” he said. “He’s definitely a public servant. He loves what he does, and he’s been doing this for 14 years.”
As he continued his remarks, Sheriff Doughtie shared some of the comments made by Master Officer Doughtie’s colleague who submitted a nomination form recommending that he receive the honor of being named Dare County Employee of the Month.

“‘I am nominating Brent Doughtie for Employee of the Month, and I want to explain why,’” Sheriff Doughtie read from the nomination form. “‘Length of service is not a reason to take someone’s contribution for granted; it is a reason to recognize it. More specifically, Brent has been with the [Dare] County Sheriff’s Office since 2012. What he contributed this month was not different from what he contributes each month. Brent is plugged into the community like no other officer I have ever worked with. He not only has his cell phone number ready for anyone that may need his help; he also answers the call. But the fact that he has delivered that quality of service for 14 years running, with no diminishment and no ceremony, represents exactly the kind of sustained commitment that law enforcement agencies thrive on.’”
The sentiments expressed in the nomination were echoed in Sheriff Doughtie’s own remarks, as he highlighted Master Officer Doughtie’s knowledge, compassion and willingness to go above and beyond in his work with both his colleagues at the Dare County Justice Center, as well as the many members of the Dare County community he interacts with on a daily basis.
“He’s a wealth of knowledge,” Sheriff Doughtie continued. “He works with some people that are very competent in the judicial system. He’s a part of the drug court and has a heart for those who become dependent on other things to get by. He wants to make sure that things go the right way and what happens is the right outcome. With a friend like that, I don’t believe you can go wrong. And as a law enforcement officer, you can’t find anything better than that, that’s for sure. I’m honored to be able to stand here and say those things about him.”
As he concluded his remarks and presented Deputy Sheriff Master Officer Brent Doughtie with his Dare County Employee of the Month award for September 2026, Sheriff Doughtie said, “It’s an honor for me to be able to give that to you. I’m proud of you, I love you, and you take care of yourself.”
